A major regional airport is preparing for a significant expansion, promising new facilities and services to reshape travel and commerce across the region.

The Sunshine Coast Airport Gateway Precinct in Queensland has now received the green light, paving the way for a hotel, retail spaces, childcare, medical services, and other commercial developments.

“The Gateway Precinct will create a welcoming arrival and departure experience with a high-quality public realm that reflects the region’s unique identity – making Sunshine Coast Airport the natural choice for travellers, business and our community,” Mills said.

“It will help to unlock tourism and business opportunities that will attract investment, support regional growth and create jobs for the region.”

Economic Development Queensland CEO Julian Simmonds said the project aligned with national and regional growth priorities.

“With the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032 and a fast-growing population, it is vital to develop a world-class airport precinct that connects communities and welcomes visitors,” he said.

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the expansion would strengthen accessibility and competitiveness for travellers and businesses.

“This part of the expansion potentially includes short-term accommodation for up to 250 rooms, retail shops, air services and an aviation showroom,” she said.

“With additional international flights arriving and departing, the expansion of the airport is vital to ensuring our region remains accessible and competitive with other holiday destinations.

“The airport expansion will continue to drive tourism growth, support local jobs and give businesses the confidence to invest in the region.”

Already one of the fastest-growing airports in the country, the site connects to five domestic and international destinations.

By 2040, it is expected to directly contribute $460 million to Australia’s GDP and support over 3400 jobs.

The approval comes after Jetstar announced direct flights from Sunshine Coast to Bali, with connections to Singapore.
